INWED Breakfast Presentation: Resilience, Representation, and Community in Engineering

Join the Victoria Branch and McElhanney Engineering for a powerful and personal keynote address from Dr. Mina Hoorfar, Dean of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Victoria. Dr. Hoorfar will speak on her journey from a young engineering student to a leader in the field. Drawing from her own experiences, she will share the challenges she faced as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated profession, and the pivotal moments that shaped her path. Summary

Join us for a powerful and personal keynote address from Dr. Mina Hoorfar, Dean of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Victoria. Dr. Hoorfar will speak on her journey from a young engineering student to a leader in the field. Drawing from her own experiences, she will share the challenges she faced as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated profession, and the pivotal moments that shaped her path.

This talk will highlight the critical role of representation in engineering and why visibility of women in technical and leadership roles matters more than ever. It will also explore the strength of community among women engineers and how collective support can transform careers and institutions alike.

With a thoughtful look at both the hurdles and the opportunities facing women in engineering today, as well as discussion on key current developments in engineering and how the profession is changing, this speech will be both an honest reflection and an inspiring call to action for building a more inclusive and supportive future in STEM.

Speaker

Dr. Mina Hoorfar

BASc (University of Tehran), MASc (U of T), PhD (U of T), P.Eng Areas of expertise include theoretical and experimental advancement of surface science and microfluidic technologies. Dr. Mina Hoorfar is a Professor and Dean of Engineering and Computer Science Departments, The University of Victoria, Canada. She was a Professor and Director of the School of Engineering, The University of British Columbia, Canada. She is known nationally and internationally for her research and innovation in microfluidics and its applications to device miniaturization and sensing technologies. Her group has extensive experience in surface science and the development of lab-on-chip devices for cancer cell detection, online monitoring of water quality, and portable sensors for sensitive and selective detection of target gases. Her work has led to several patents, licenses, and commercialization with industrial partners in different sectors including oil/gas, wastewater, health, and safety and security.
