This day is an opportunity to honor the lives lost and reaffirm our commitment to ending gender-based violence. On December 6, 1989, a gunman went into the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal and killed 14 women. All but two were engineering students. It was not an accident that they were all women; they were the target. This was the largest mass shooting in Canadian History until the Nova Scotia shooting more than 30 years later. Since 1991, Dec 6 has been the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
