Submarines are one of the most fascinating engineering marvels of the modern world. This presentation will briefly touch on the history of the Canadian Submarine Service, engineering aspects including diving/surfacing, structure, hydrostatic, power and propulsion, and various combat systems. Canadian Patrol Submarine Program (CPSP) is a hot topic as the largest procurement military project in Canadian history. This presentation will briefly discuss the two finalists. Lastly, career opportunities in the Department of National Defense (DND) as a member of the military or a civilian Federal Public Servant will be explored.
LCdr Jimmy Lau has been in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) for 28 years. For the last three years, Jimmy has been the Naval Architecture Officer (NAO) Section Head at Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton (FMFCB) in Esquimalt BC.
He started off in the Naval Reserve as a Marine System Engineering Operator (stoker) sailing on Maritime Costal Defence Vessels (MCDVs) during summer months while completing a Mining Mechanical Engineering Undergrad Degree at Queen’s University.
Upon completion of university, he took his commission as an Officer and commenced marine engineering training on various Canadian Patrol Frigates (CPF) cumulating with a NATO SNMG1 Deployment, a piracy patrol off Somalia and a drug interdiction operation.
Since 2009, Jimmy has been involved with the submarine program including 4 years as the Engineering Officer onboard HMCS VICTORIA and various shore postings. He was selected for specialized training where he completed a Masters in Naval Architecture at the University College London (UCL). For the last three years, Jimmy has been the Naval Architecture Officer (NAO) Section Head at Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton (FMFCB) in Esquimalt BC.
