As we close 2025—BCSEG’s first year of operations—I want to reflect on what we have built together, highlight our key milestones, and outline priorities for the year ahead. Thank you for your trust, energy, and advocacy for our professions
Membership & Community
We officially launched BCSEG membership on October 17, 2025, aligning this major milestone with the EGBC Annual General Meeting and registrant renewal cycle. This launch capped months of preparation, including building the membership platform, designing the website, and developing member services. Since the launch, our community has grown steadily, through a combination of individual sign-ups and group purchases. Looking ahead to 2026, we are committed to expanding our membership base with targeted recruitment, engaging events, and dedicated employer programs.
To make it easier for employers to invest in their teams, we introduced the Group Membership program and promoted it through EGBC channels and our own website. This initiative is designed to support organizational growth and foster a stronger community.
Branches: Engagement Across BC
Throughout the year, branches have remained the grassroots engine of connection for BCSEG. They hosted technical talks, networking events, K-12 outreach, and local Annual General Meetings. For example, the Central Interior Branch showcased an impressive slate of activities and maintained its scholarship program at UNBC. We advanced the branch operating framework by developing the Branch Operations Manual and related governance tools, providing branch committees with clear guidance for planning, budgeting, and reporting.
As a gesture of appreciation at year-end, we offered a fee holiday for branch executive committees, valid until December 31, 2026.
Programs & Services
Our Professional Development (ENG Learn) program and the foundational work on careers and events infrastructure progressed steadily throughout the year, paced alongside membership and website rollouts. The transition of the Careers Page from EGBC is underway, with the go-live expected in early 2026 based on EGBC’s notice requirements. We will keep members updated on the final timeline.
Additionally, we began to standardize member communications. Starting in 2026, members will receive a dedicated weekly newsletter called “The Dig Digest,” featuring member-only items such as affinity partner offers, opportunities, surveys, and calls to volunteer.
Governance & Foundations
A major milestone this quarter was the formalization of our governance backbone. The Board approved the initial Terms of Reference for the Executive, Governance, Membership, and Finance, Risk & Audit Committees, establishing clear roles and accountability for 2026. The Finance, Risk & Audit Committee (FRAC) now operates under approved Terms of Reference, providing monthly reporting and budgeting cycles to support Board oversight and organizational sustainability.
Financial Sustainability
We strengthened revenue diversification through memberships, events, sponsorships, and affinity programs. These inflows, combined with group memberships and sourcing upcoming sponsorships in the new year, will ideally help stabilize our financial position as we move into 2026.
Advocacy: A Seat at the Table
Members have encouraged BCSEG to engage proactively on policy topics that impact professional practice and public confidence. In December, the Board discussed issuing a position statement, emphasizing meaningful consultation with the professions regarding the proposed Professional Alliance Act. This approach reinforces BCSEG’s role as an independent advocacy voice for engineering and geoscience, while allowing time to engage members and partners.
In 2026, we will formalize processes for member task forces and position development, ensuring that statements are considered through Board governance and informed by subject-matter expertise across branches and disciplines.
Operational Improvements
Throughout 2025, we implemented finance and operations infrastructure, including banking, payroll and bookkeeping systems, and regular reporting cycles. Improvements in branch accounting and reconciliation, such as coding and general ledger reporting, support accurate year-end reporting, budgeting, and audit readiness.
We also managed vendor relationships and technical delivery with Wicket, overseeing the membership, website, and events platform. Our focus was on addressing issues and prioritizing releases to support the fall launch and ongoing operations.
What’s Next: 2026 Priorities
Strategic Planning & Townhall Engagement: Looking ahead, BCSEG will prioritize strategic planning to align organizational goals and ensure effective resource allocation for 2026. Additionally, we are committed to hosting regular townhall sessions to foster transparent communication, gather member input, and strengthen community engagement. These initiatives will help guide our direction and reinforce a member-driven approach to decision-making.
